Legendary Filmmaker will be honored on January 2, 2020 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Famed movie maker Roger Corman will receive the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Houston Film Critics Society (HFCS) at its annual award ceremony January 2, 2020 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). At 7:00 PM the following night, the MFAH will screen Corman’s 1964 horror film The Masque of the Red Death, followed by a Q & A with the director.
Corman is well known as the producer/director who introduced many talents to movie audiences, including Jack Nicholson, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Sandra Bullock, Sylvester Stallone, Tommy Lee Jones, Ron Howard, Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern, John Sayles, and Peter Bogdanovich.
With more than 300 feature films to his credit, Corman now has three new projects in the works and remains active in the operations of New World Pictures, the production and distribution company he founded nearly 50 years ago. He will accept his award in person at the 13th Annual Houston Film Critics Society’s Movie Awards on Thursday, January 2, 2020.
With the announcement, HFCS President Doug Harris acknowledged fellow society member Joe Leydon’s nomination of Mr. Corman for this recognition and reflected on its significance to those who appreciate cinematic works.
“It is a rare privilege for the Houston Films Critics to welcome the ‘godfather of independent film’ to our city as we salute his ground-breaking style, his amazing body of work, and his legacy to film lovers and filmmakers around the world,” said Harris.
Each year, the Houston Film Critics Society honors films in 17 traditional movie categories, with a few distinctive additions like the Texas Independent Film Awards, Best Movie Poster Art, and Outstanding Cinematic Achievement.
The ticketed, “Oscar-style” awards show – the only one of its kind staged by a regional film critics’ group – is attended by local movie enthusiasts, industry notables, and HFCS award nominees. The after party, a popular addition to the 2019 awards festivities, takes place in the Ultimate Ransom and Fountain Rooms at the neighboring Hotel ZaZa Houston Museum District.
Inquiries regarding event tickets, local accommodations, and underwriting opportunities should be directed to HFCS President Doug Harris. Additional information on the MFAH’s film programming is available at www.MFAH.org.
