Texas-Made Films Vie for Houston Critics Honors

Five titles nominated as the year’s best movie produced in Texas

Five films produced in Texas will compete for the prestigious Texas Independent Film Award (TIFA) during the 15th annual Houston Film Critics Society (HFCS) awards in February. The TIFA review and selection process is supervised by HFCS members Cary Darling and Joshua Starnes, a past president of the Society.

Named as nominees are:

  • Amaraica: Tim Sparks introduces an undocumented immigrant who wants to be a U.S. citizen
  • Playing God: Scott Brignac follows brother-and-sister con artists as they plan a big job
  • Red Rocket: Sean Baker visits a down-on-his-luck porn star who revisits his Texas City home
  • Test Pattern: Shatara Michelle Ford considers race, parenthood, and the freedom to choose
  • 12 Mighty Orphans: Ty Roberts returns to football in Fort Worth during the Great Depression

“This year, the TIFA nominees once again tell the story of premier movie making in Texas,” says Douglas Harris, HFCS President. “As film critics working in Texas, we are extremely proud to honor the talent working on both sides of the camera and to spotlight what can be created with the resources and creativity available in our hometowns.”

To be nominated for the TIFA, a film must be shot in the Lone Star State and submitted to the Society by October 31. Members of a select HFCS committee screen the possible nominees before all voting members view the nominees and select the winner. The TIFA winners will be announced February 19, 2022, at the Society’s live awards gathering at the Midtown Arts and Theater Center in Houston (MATCH).

“We are thrilled to return to MATCH for the third time where we will reveal the winner in the TIFA and other categories,” says Harris. “Each year, the HFCS awards gain more and more notice as film enthusiasts look to our members to bring worthy films and filmmakers to the public’s attention.”

Nominees in the other 18 traditional categories, along with ticket information for the awards ceremony, will be announced on January 5, 2022,
